Outreach at Cosford: Round 2

Cosford: World War One

Today was one of the most fun days I've had so far at my job. It started with the usual walk into work and waiting for Martin to pick me and Hannah up in the STEM van and take us to Cosford RAF museum. Here me and Hannah was split up and taken under different peoples guidance. Here the person I was shadowing was tasked with talking about the planes of World War One and what the fighter pilots would wear.  This was a workshop I feel I could probably deliver after a couple more times of observing given its relative simplicity and lightness on history.

The workshop started with a quick talk in front of 3 world war one planes. The first being a Sopwith Pup and then a Sopwith Strutter and finally a Bristol M1c. Here the guide spoke at length about the materials the planes were made of and certain features of the planes. After that they got discussing about how there was no such thing as the RAF at the time and that the pilots were just normal soldiers with limited specialist training at the time and their pilots' equipment was little more than a large overcoat and a leather cap with goggles and a pair of rabbit fur gloves.

After this talk there was three activities for the pupils to take part in, the first was using a piece of string combining two plastic cups, this was used as a demonstration of what pilots in the air would use to communicate to each other. The second activity was dressing up in a mixture of replicas and originals of world war one pilot gear, one particular piece which was deemed very popular was the German barons jacket. The last activity was a handling of artefacts, this is where the guide gave out to a small bunch of children genuine world war one artefacts and discussed their purpose and history; this was very popular as it was extremely rare for pupils to see genuine artefacts from that time period.

Overall today offered me a genuine insight into what I'd be doing there and how much fun it will be for the children and for me. Cosford looks like a really good experience for me to develop as a person and also to develop my social skills, communication and all round knowledge surrounding everything.
